Can beginners go horseback riding?
Absolutely! Whether it’s your first time or you’re an experienced rider, we have the perfect horse for you. Our guides match each rider with a well-suited horse based on physicality and experience. Before the ride, we provide a brief orientation, and our guides are always available to assist you.
If you meet our age, height, and weight requirements, you must be able to mount and dismount independently and comfortably ride for five miles at a walk/trot.
However, if you’ve had a bad past experience or feel extremely anxious about riding, it might not be the best activity for you.
How many people are in each group?
Each guide leads a maximum of nine riders to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Can we ride without a guide?
For safety reasons, all rides are guided.
Can my experienced 5-year-old ride?
All riders must be at least 6 years old and capable of physically controlling a full-size horse without assistance. Our horses weigh over 1,000 pounds, and their equipment is designed for adult riders.
However, there are no age restrictions for our guided carriage or hayrides, making them a great option for younger children.
Are helmets provided?
Yes! We provide helmets free of charge, and they are required for all riders 16 and under—no exceptions.
Is there a weight limit for riders?
Yes, our maximum weight limit is 250 lbs for horseback riding to ensure both rider safety and horse welfare.
There are no weight restrictions for our guided carriage or hayrides.
Do you offer an advanced ride for experienced riders?
While we do not offer cantering or galloping, if you love horses and nature, you’ll enjoy a scenic, relaxing ride through the breathtaking trails of Cades Cove.
Why don’t you allow galloping?
For safety reasons, our horses are specifically trained to avoid running on the trails. Allowing galloping would make them less predictable and potentially unsafe for future riders.
Do you ride English or Western?
Our horses are trained in Western riding. If you’re familiar with English riding, this is a great chance to try something new!
Can my child ride with me on the same horse?
No, double riding is not permitted for safety reasons. However, our guided carriage and hayrides are a great alternative for families with young children.
Can I ride if I’m pregnant?
Even though our rides are gentle, horses can be unpredictable. For safety reasons, we do not recommend horseback riding while pregnant.
What should I wear for horseback riding?
For comfort and safety, we recommend:
– Closed-toe shoes with a ½-inch heel that fit securely.
– Comfortable pants and a shirt with sleeves.
– Avoid shorts and sneakers, as they are not ideal for riding.
– No loose or bulky items like backpacks or purses (we do not provide lockers).
– Make sure hats, caps, and visors are snug and secure to avoid losing them on the trail.
Should we tip our trail guide?
Tips are always appreciated! If you enjoyed your ride, feel free to show your guide some love. Thank you!
